Designing a Christmas Wonderland for Clayton Hotel Bristol
Clayton Hotel Bristol Christmas 2023 scheme design was not just a project; it was a journey back in time through the historic elegance of the Grade II-listed Former Everard’s Printing Works. This architectural gem, built in 1900 by Henry Williams, showcases a Modern Style facade crafted by William James Neatby, chief designer for Doulton and Co, in honor of printer Edward Everard.
The facade’s triple archway design, adorned with a female figure symbolizing Light and Truth, pays homage to the nearby Church of St John the Baptist. While most of the red brick building met its end in 1970, the preservation of the facade was paramount, as it boasts the largest decorative Doulton Carrara ware tile facade in Britain—a tribute to the contributions of William Morris and Johannes Gutenberg to printing and literature.
Having a personal connection to this architectural marvel, featured prominently in my ceramic GCSE coursework, added a layer of sentimentality to the creative process. The hotel’s interior, with its tones of coppers, oranges, teal, and American walnut, provided the foundation for a Christmas colour scheme that would exude warmth and sophistication. The chosen palette—Forest Berry—incorporates rose gold, soft pinks, plum, soft gold, warm white, natural wood, and warm white LED lights.
The Clayton Hotel Christmas journey begins outdoors, with guests welcomed by garlands on the railings and two real pine wreaths gracing the iron gates of this beautiful grade two list buildinguto. Transitioning into the listed part of the hotel, a garland-trimmed staircase leads to a majestic 8ft tree in the main reception. Garlands on the stairs banister and phalaenopsis orchids on tables add a touch of opulence.
While artificial trees were incorporated into the design, realism was prioritized. Trees from Balsam Hill, crafted using PE needles for a lifelike appearance, ensure durability and ease of setup and takedown. These realistic trees help create a seasonal lasting stunning visual around the Hotel.
As the sky goes dark there is a lovely large glass roof in the bar, which helps create a magical ambiance for guests as the twinkling lights and reflective baubles bounce there lights off the glass adding to the magical atmosphere of Christmas while they sip evening cocktails with friends.
